Chair Michael Haxton shared with the Committee that the Middle High School can hold 640 students. This brought up discussion regarding capacity and need for expansion. Anna explained the likely need to separate age groups effectively and the school architecture was not designed for all those age groups. Michael also shared the amount of space anticipated by the Superintendent to combine the two schools was 21,000 square feet of expansion.
The committee discussed the costs presented by various consultants for the Elementary School. EEI estimated $8-12 million and Banwell at $11 Million.
Portable classrooms, being researched by Michael with Aries construction, fitting the 21,000 s/f need were estimated to cost between $5-8 million dollars.
The committee revisited the previous discussion of partnership with “like” school districts, such as Croydon or Grantham and feel that this would benefit the sustainability of a Sunapee K-12 district for the longer term.
The committee also discussed the possibility of potential minimal work on SCES to allow for time to develop an ideal plan.
The committee also discussed presenting preliminary findings of our collective work and providing an update at the October 7 meeting which encapsulates the makeup of committee members, our thoughts, our collective ideas and a final report forthcoming. A meeting was set by Melissa, Kevin, and Anna to begin a draft of the statement to be read at the Oct. 7 School Board Meeting.
Melissa provided an update regarding the running water at the elementary school as it was a question/concern by the committee. Chris also clarified the basis for the running water and it was less concerning.
Meeting adjourned at 6:42 pm. The next meeting was set for Wednesday, September 30th at 5pm via ZOOM for Committee members only.
Respectfully submitted,
Anna Miner
